To better equip students for the evolving job market, a one-day training programme titled “How to Become a Career Guide” was held on January 22, 2025, at Bosco Reach Out, Guwahati. Organized by Bosco Reach Out, Career Guidance and Job Placement Services, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Don Bosco Job Placement Network and the Forum of Salesian Career Guidance and Job Placement, the event brought together over 25 participants, including teachers, career counsellors, vocational centre in-charges, and placement coordinators from Assam and Meghalaya.
Fr. Ignatius Gari SDB, Associate Director of Bosco Reach Out, inaugurated the session, extending a warm welcome to the resource persons—Fr. Gabriel Karunaraj SDB, National Director of the Don Bosco Job Placement Network, and Fr. Renigo Roy SDB, Assistant Professor at Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur. He encouraged participants to recognize the significance of career counselling in shaping students’ futures.
The training commenced with Fr. Renigo Roy SDB’s session on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, which underscores the diverse ways students learn and process information. By identifying individual strengths-such as linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinaesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic intelligence-educators can offer tailored career guidance that aligns with students’ abilities and interests. He also elaborated on Career Mapping, a strategic tool that helps students visualize their academic and professional pathways. Through this approach, participants learned how to guide students in aligning their skills and passions with suitable educational streams and career opportunities.
Fr. Gabriel Karunaraj SDB conducted an insightful session on job hunting in the digital age, introducing participants to platforms like the Don Bosco Job Placement Network (www.donboscojobs.org), the Jobs DBI App, and government job portals such as National Career Service (NCS). He provided practical tips on leveraging these digital resources for effective job searches and improving employability. The session also covered crucial topics like government job categories-civil services, PSUs, banking, railways, and defense-along with major entrance exams such as UPSC, SSC, AFCAT, NEET, and JEE. Additionally, he highlighted scholarship opportunities like the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), ensuring that educators could guide students in accessing financial support for higher education.
The enthusiasm displayed by the participants underscored their commitment to continuous learning in career counselling. Encouraged by the programme’s success, Bosco Reach Out and the Don Bosco Job Placement Network plan to organize further training sessions in collaboration with Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur, throughout the year. These sessions will ensure that educators remain well-equipped with the latest tools and knowledge to help students make informed career decisions.
