Youths of St Michael Church, Damra.
The Parish of St. Michaels in Damra concluded a vibrant and transformative three-day live-in youth camp this week, successfully uniting the younger generation through a powerful blend of faith, sports, and creativity. The “Youth for Mary” program, held from October 18th to 20th, 2025 provided an immersive experience in catechesis, fellowship, and service for the parish’s youth.
Under the leadership of Fr. Richard Barla SDB and supported by a collaborative team from the Salesian community, the MSMHC sisters, and dedicated lay leaders, the camp was designed to make the Catholic faith accessible and engaging. The event highlighted a shared mission within the parish, bringing together clergy, religious, and laity to mentor and inspire the next generation.
The program’s schedule was packed with diverse activities aimed at holistic development. Mornings were energized with sports competitions, including basketball, football, and throwball, fostering teamwork, discipline, and healthy competition. Afternoons were dedicated to intellectual and spiritual growth, featuring a catechetical quiz on the Blessed Virgin Mary and creative sessions like a Gospel “sing-out” and dramatic skits that brought Gospel values to life.
The impact of the camp extended far beyond the scheduled activities. Participants reported a deepened understanding of Marian devotion and a more personal connection to their faith.
In a heartfelt address to the gathered youth, Parish Priest Fr. Francis Kalriparampil expressed his joy at the event’s success. “It is a beautiful scene to see you youngsters coming together—your laughter, your teamwork, your healthy competition, and your desire to praise the Mother of Jesus,” he said.
He reminded the youth that “Mary is with you as you strive, learn, and grow in virtue,” and drew a powerful parallel between their activities and Mary’s faith. “She did not seek glory for herself; she welcomed the vocation God prepared for her,” Fr. Kalriparampil stated, encouraging the youth to use their talents with humility, to build up others, and to bring glory to God.
A key outcome of the initiative was the practical leadership experience gained by emerging youth leaders, who were instrumental in planning and running the event under the guidance of Fr. Barla.
In conclusion, the “Youth for Mary” camp has been hailed as a resounding success, strengthening the parish’s social fabric and equipping its young members to carry the flame of faith into their families and the wider community. The event stands as a model for joyful and effective youth ministry, anchored in devotion and service.
