A spirit of joy and deep reverence filled the Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Mawlai, Shillong, as 24 Salesian and religious brothers were ordained to the Diaconate in a solemn Eucharistic celebration on 1st July morning. The ordination liturgy, which began at 6:45 AM, was presided over by Most Rev. Bernard Laloo, DD, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Shillong. Among the ordinandi were six deacons from the Salesian Province of Guwahati (ING). Rev. Fr. Sebastian Kuricheal, SDB, Provincial of ING, represented the Province at the celebration.
The ordinandi hailed from various Provinces and Congregations across India, including the Salesian Provinces of Shillong (INS), Guwahati (ING), Dimapur (IND), Bangalore (INK), and Hyderabad (INH), as well as members of the TOR Congregation.
In his homily, Bishop Bernard Laloo reminded the ordinandi of the profound identity of the deacon as one who serves in the image of Christ the Servant. He exhorted them to remain rooted in prayer, humility, and charity as they step into a new chapter of their religious and pastoral journey. Quoting Scripture, he said, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
“Service is Christ-like, and you are called to be servants,” the bishop emphasized. “Like Christ who knelt down to wash the feet of His disciples, you too must be willing to serve.” He reminded them that they are commissioned to proclaim the Gospel not merely with their lips, but through love and action. “Every homily must be born of prayer—kneeling before the tabernacle and reflecting deeply on the Word of God,” he added. Offering pastoral advice, he concluded, “Speak not to impress people but to change them; not to insult, but to inspire.”
The ordination Mass was attended by a large gathering of priests, religious, staff, students, and well-wishers. The celebration was also streamed live via Don Bosco Media, Shillong, enabling many across the country and abroad to participate in the sacred event.
The entire Salesian Province of Guwahati rejoices with the newly ordained deacons and prays for their fruitful ministry in the service of the Word, the Sacraments, and the People of God.
