The Salesian Congregation will officially reopen its renovated global headquarters on Friday, June 27, marking a significant milestone in its worldwide mission of service to young people. Located at Via Marsala 42, adjacent to the historic Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Castro Pretorio – a sanctuary built by Don Bosco himself – the site now stands revitalized after three years of extensive restoration.
This headquarters, which houses the Rector Major and his General Council, is not merely an administrative centre but the global coordinating hub for Salesian activities in 137 countries. Since its relocation in 2017 from Via della Pisana to its current strategic position near Rome’s Termini Station, it has served as a key link between the Church and the streets, echoing Don Bosco’s original vision of education, pastoral care, and outreach.
The restoration, initiated in 2022, was undertaken to modernize the facilities, better serving the evolving governance needs of the Congregation while preserving its spiritual and historical legacy. The site, deeply rooted in Salesian heritage, is also home to the Sacred Heart Youth Centre, services for the poor and refugees, and the Casa Don Bosco Museum, which will reopen as part of the day’s celebrations.
The opening ceremony, coinciding with the liturgical Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, will feature reflections from Church leaders and civil authorities, including the Rector Major, Fr Fabio Attard, Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, and Dr. Barbara Funari, Councillor for Youth Policies of Rome.
With this event, the Salesians renew their commitment to forming a “home and school” for the young, particularly the most vulnerable, continuing the legacy Don Bosco began in Rome in 1880 at the direct request of Pope Leo XIII.
