In a transformative three-day orientation programme, Don Bosco Veedu, Trivandrum, reaffirmed its commitment to social change by aligning its vision, people, and practices through a strategic and purpose-driven approach. The event brought together national and international experts to guide staff and Salesians toward a cohesive and impactful future.
The programme opened with a virtual keynote by Mr. Biju Anithanam from the USA, who stressed the importance of organizational clarity. Quoting Milton’s Paradise Lost, he cautioned, “Without proper orientation, one can make a heaven of hell and a hell of heaven.” He emphasized the need to root organizational direction in identity and values: “To know where we’re going, we must first know who we are and what we stand for.”
Fr. Jiji Kalavanal offered a comprehensive overview of the life and mission of Don Bosco and the evolution of Don Bosco Veedu Society. He mapped out the institution’s vision, project portfolios, operational norms, and clearly defined staff roles. His session was a reminder of the organization’s founding legacy and the relevance of structured purpose in daily operations.
Fr. Thomas Meckadan addressed the legal responsibilities in social work, particularly in child protection. His session underlined the necessity of ethical standards and legal compliance in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable children.
On the second day, the focus shifted inward. Fr. Joe Fernandez, SDB, led a compelling workshop on Emotional Intelligence. “We cannot create effective teams or safe spaces for our beneficiaries unless our own people are fulfilled and emotionally grounded,” he said. The session was lauded by participants for its practical value and emotional depth.
The final day featured Mr. Loy George, Senior Director at Swasti, Bengaluru, who facilitated a workshop on purpose-driven development. He introduced participants to strategic frameworks such as Systems Thinking, Project Cycle Management, and the Logical Framework Approach. “Purpose is not a slogan,” he said. “It is the compass that aligns actions with impact.” His simplified and interactive approach made complex ideas accessible to all, regardless of formal training in social work.
The orientation concluded with renewed unity, enhanced clarity, and a deepened commitment to Don Bosco’s vision of empowerment and service. Staff emerged better equipped to translate purpose into practice, strengthening Don Bosco Veedu’s role as a catalyst for social transformation.
