The three-day Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) Summer Camp commenced on 17 July at Mary Help of Christians Church, Satgaon, with a vibrant and prayerful inaugural programme that brought together nearly 400 young people.

The inaugural function was graced by Fr. Joseph Teron, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Baithalangso as the chief guest. Also present were Fr. Abraham Kanattu, SDB, Rector and Parish Priest of Sojong; Fr. Albert Thyrniang, SDB, Parish Priest of Satgaon; other priests and religious sisters; and the four Salesian brothers who will be the animators during the camp.

Delivering the keynote address, Fr. Joseph Teron reflected on the camp’s theme, “Educating Young Souls in the Spirit of Don Bosco,” highlighting the essential elements of Salesian spirituality. He reminded the participants that St. John Bosco dedicated his life to “the young, especially the poor,” seeing in every young person a beloved child of God endowed with immense potential and called to holiness.

Encouraging the participants to appreciate their Salesian spirit, Fr. Teron described Don Bosco as a practical and joyful saint who believed that young people should be free to “play, run, jump and make merry,” provided they avoided sin. He urged the youth to embrace Don Bosco’s spirit of faith, optimism, discipline, and service, allowing these values to shape their lives and inspire them to become responsible Christians and upright citizens.

Welcoming the gathering, Fr. Albert Thyrniang expressed his gratitude to the organisers for the meticulous preparation of the camp. He especially congratulated the parish youth under the able leadership of Fr. Louis Martin Bhengra, SDB, Youth Director, and Sr. Agnes Marak for organising an impressive inaugural programme. He also extended a heartfelt welcome to the camp animators—Bro. Jeniberth A. Sangma, SDB, Bro. Jevon Kerketta, SDB, Bro. Sanjav Xalxo, SDB, and Bro. Akash, CST—thanking them for their generous availability.

The inauguration was further enriched by colourful cultural performances, including beautifully choreographed dances and a melodious welcome song presented by the parish youth.

The camp will conclude on 19 July, with its highlight being the solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist to be presided over by Fr. Paul Rabha, SDB, Rector and Director of Don Bosco Social and Technical Institute (DBSTI), Tezpur. Over the course of the three days, participants will engage in sessions on Salesian spirituality, leadership formation, prayer, recreation, and community-building, all aimed at helping them grow in the spirit St. John Bosco.
