Sonajuli No. 2 witnessed a historic and grace-filled moment as the newly constructed St. Dominic Savio Catholic Church was solemnly inaugurated and blessed by Rev. Bishop Michael Akasius Toppo DD, Bishop of Tezpur Diocese on 24 May 2025, in the presence of a large gathering of faithful, clergy, religious, and village leaders.
The memorable celebration was attended by Rev. Fr. Anugrah Tete SDB, Rector and Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Minj SDB, Principal, and Rev. Fr. Xavier Tete SDB, Vice Principal of Don Bosco School, Dimakuchi, along with several church leaders and dignitaries who joined the faithful in thanking God for this long-awaited blessing.
For the Catholic faithful of Sonajuli No. 2, the inauguration of the church marked the fulfilment of a dream cherished for nearly twenty years. The village community had patiently prayed and worked towards building a place of worship. Through their tireless efforts, sacrifices, unity, and faith, this dream finally became a reality. Special gratitude was expressed to Mr. Amit Tirkey, whose generous support and helping hand greatly contributed towards the successful completion of the church.
The Holy Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Bishop Michael Akasius Toppo. In his homily on the occasion of Pentecost Sunday, the Bishop reminded the faithful about the mission entrusted to every Christian to proclaim the Gospel of love courageously, just as the Apostles did after receiving the Holy Spirit. He encouraged the faithful to become living witnesses of Christ in their families and communities.
The Bishop also reflected on the life of St. Dominic Savio, the patron saint of the church, highlighting his holiness, purity, and deep love for God. He reminded the congregation that Dominic Savio became a saint at the young age of fourteen through his simple yet extraordinary life of faith and virtue. The Bishop called upon the youth and children to imitate the saint’s holiness and dedication to God.
Since the celebration coincided with the feast of Mary Help of Christians, Bishop Michael Akasius Toppo also spoke about the maternal protection and guidance of Mother Mary in the life of the Church. He invited the faithful to remain close to Mary and seek her intercession in their daily struggles and spiritual journey.
The celebration also included a vibrant cultural programme where the faithful expressed their gratitude to God through traditional dances, songs, and performances. Dressed in their colourful traditional attire, the community beautifully showcased their rich cultural heritage and joyful spirit, making the occasion even more memorable and festive.
