Along with people across Assam, Don Bosco School, Panbazar, paid an emotional tribute to the legendary Assamese singer, composer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on his first death anniversary on 19 September 2026.

The tribute programme brought together the teaching staff of the school in remembrance of the beloved singer whose music and artistic contributions have left a lasting imprint on the cultural landscape of Assam. The programme was led by Principal Fr. (Dr.) Alex Mathew, Parish Priest Fr. Thomas Lakra, Vice Principal Fr. Bromio Ch. Marak, and Academic Coordinator Mollika Sharma, who joined the staff in offering floral tributes to Zubeen Garg.

The programme was coordinated by the school’s music teacher Papu Gohain. A special musical rendition of Zubeen Garg’s songs was presented by Commerce faculty member Purbadri Banerjee, while Sehnaz Ahmed, a member of the English faculty, presented a graceful dance performance in honour of the late singer.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. (Dr.) Alex Mathew recalled Zubeen Garg’s immense contribution to Assamese culture and music. He highlighted the singer’s ability to touch the hearts of people through his music and expressed the hope that his songs and artistic legacy would continue to live in the hearts and minds of his admirers for generations to come.

The programme also remembered Zubeen Garg as a poet. Senior Hindi faculty member Malabika Roymedhi Das spoke about his life and literary creativity and recited a few of his poems, offering the gathering an insight into another dimension of his artistic personality.

The programme was anchored by senior English faculty member Bijay Laxmi Baruah, who guided the proceedings with sensitivity and warmth.

The tribute culminated in a deeply moving rendition of “Mayabini,” one of Zubeen Garg’s poignant songs. As the song was sung, everyone present stood together in remembrance, many with moist eyes. The emotional finale brought the gathering to a solemn close, reflecting the profound affection and sense of loss felt by the people of Assam for a much-loved voice of the state.

Through the tribute, Don Bosco School, Panbazar, remembered Zubeen Garg not only as a celebrated musician but also as a poet, artist and cultural figure whose music continues to resonate deeply with the people of Assam.
