Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Haflong, celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and solemnity on August 15, 2026. The occasion became a double celebration for the institution as the school not only commemorated the nation’s freedom on campus but also emerged victorious in the district-level Independence Day parade organized by the District Administration of Dima Hasao.
The celebrations at the school commenced at 7:30 a.m. under the patriotic theme, “One Nation • One Vision • One Identity.” The school management, clergy, teachers, staff and students gathered to honour the nation and pay tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices secured India’s independence.
The programme began with the unfurling of the National Tricolour, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Students displayed remarkable discipline, coordination and precision during the ceremonial March Past, setting a patriotic tone for the celebrations.
The Chief Guest, Rev. Fr. Albert D. Sangma, SDB, Rector and Parish Priest of Haflong, addressed the gathering and highlighted the historical significance of Independence Day. Paying tribute to the freedom fighters, he urged the students to uphold moral integrity, civic responsibility and dedication and to grow into responsible and upright citizens of the nation.
The patriotic spirit of the occasion was further enhanced by eloquent speeches delivered by the students and a graceful patriotic dance performance. A special attraction of the programme was the colourful and rhythmic performance by the Don Bosco Brass Band, Haflong, which enthralled the gathering.
The entire campus celebration was organized under the vision and guidance of the Principal, Rev. Fr. Xavier Beck, SDB, whose meticulous planning ensured the smooth and meaningful conduct of the programme. The presence and support of the Vice Principal, Fr. John Ngouning SDB, and the faculty members contributed significantly to the success of the celebration.
Triumph at the District-Level Parade
The celebrations reached a high point when the Don Bosco School contingent proceeded to the DSA Ground, Haflong, to participate in the central Independence Day celebrations organized by the District Administration of Dima Hasao.
The district-level parade witnessed keen competition among 15 school contingents from across the Greater Haflong region. Demonstrating exceptional discipline, synchronization, coordination and precision, the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School contingent delivered an impressive performance and bagged the First Prize in the parade competition.
The victory brought immense pride and joy to the school management, staff and students. The double achievement—commemorating the nation’s independence with patriotic enthusiasm and securing the top position in the district parade—made the 80th Independence Day an especially memorable occasion for Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Haflong.
