An Awareness Programme on the Effects of Drugs and Substance Abuse was organized at St. Dominic Savio Hr. Sec. School, Garobadha on May 20, 2026 by the Past Pupils Association of the school with the objective of educating students about the growing dangers of drug addiction and substance abuse among the youth.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Rev. Fr. Anmol Soreng, SDB, Vice Principal of the school, who emphasized the importance of discipline, moral values, and awareness in protecting young people from harmful addictions. He encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies and build a healthy and responsible future.

The programme featured enlightening sessions by Dr. Rhianon S.M. Sangma from Rerapara C&RD Block and Shri Alpheus N. Sangma, Officer In-Charge of Garobadha Police Out Post.

Dr. Rhianon S.M. Sangma sensitized the students on the serious health hazards caused by drugs, tobacco, alcohol, and other addictive substances. She explained how substance abuse negatively affects physical health, mental well-being, academic performance, and family relationships. She further highlighted that addiction often begins due to peer pressure, curiosity, emotional stress, and lack of awareness. Encouraging the students to make wise decisions, she advised them to maintain healthy friendships, engage in positive activities, and seek guidance from parents and teachers whenever faced with challenges.

Shri Alpheus N. Sangma addressed the students on the legal and social consequences of drug abuse and anti-social activities. He informed the students about the strict provisions and punishments under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and highlighted the efforts of the police department in combating drug trafficking and protecting society from the menace of drugs. Through practical examples and motivational words, he urged the students to stay away from harmful influences and become responsible citizens who contribute positively towards society.

The students actively participated in the programme and attentively listened to the valuable messages shared by the resource persons. The awareness programme created a strong impact among the students and encouraged them to work towards building a healthy and drug-free society.

The school administration expressed sincere gratitude to the resource persons for their valuable guidance. Special thanks were extended to Mr. Matseng K. K.
