St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, Garobadha, in collaboration with its Past Pupil Association, conducted an Awareness Program on Substance Abuse, Mental Health Wellbeing, Traffic Rules, and Safe Use of Social Media on 13th November 2025. A total of 360 students from Classes 8 and 9 actively participated in the program.

The event began with a welcome speech by the Principal, Fr. Punit Kumar Lakra SDB, who warmly greeted the resource persons and participants. He emphasized the need for schools to guide students not only academically but also in areas that affect their personal safety, emotional health, and responsible behaviour. He encouraged the students to listen attentively and make wise choices in life.

Three resource persons addressed the students:

Mr. Bitching Marak, Circle Inspector, Tura spoke on the legal and social implications of substance abuse. He explained the provisions of the NDPS Act, warned against the growing influence of drug peddlers, and stressed the long-term consequences of addiction. His message encouraged students to be alert and disciplined.

Dr. Steve Cherak R. Marak, Senior Psychiatrist, Tura Civil Hospital, delivered an in-depth session on mental health, discussing stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional challenges faced by adolescents. He explained early warning signs and promoted healthy coping mechanisms. He urged students to seek help without hesitation and to prioritize their mental wellbeing.

Mr. Alpheus N. Sangma, In-Charge, Police Out Post, Garobadha briefed the students on Traffic Rules and the Responsible Use of Social Media. He highlighted the dangers of reckless behaviour on the road, the importance of wearing safety gear, and the need to follow traffic regulations.

He also spoke about online safety, cautioning students against cyberbullying, fake profiles, scams, and irresponsible posting. He encouraged them to use social media wisely and maintain personal privacy.

The sessions were interactive and engaging, with students asking questions and sharing their views. The presence of 360 students made the program vibrant and impactful.

The Past Pupil Association expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the program. The school Principal thanked all the resource persons for their valuable contribution and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the holistic development and safety of every student.
