The Annual Parish Youth Convention cum Parish Day Celebration 2026 emerged as a landmark event for the Catholic community of South West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, as 167 youth delegates from various circles and sub-stations gathered at St. Dominic Savio Parish, Garobadha, from May 8 to 10, 2026. Centered on the inspiring theme, “You are the Light of the World,” the three-day convention successfully blended spiritual formation, leadership development, career guidance, and vibrant community celebration.
The convention commenced on May 8 with great enthusiasm and solemnity. The Opening Ceremony and Flag Hoisting were led by the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr Vincent M. Sangma, Diocese Youth Director, whose presence highlighted the significance of the gathering within the larger Tura Diocese. Fr. Siby John, SDB, Parish Youth Animator, delivered the keynote address, encouraging the youth to take active ownership of their mission and responsibilities within the Church and society.
The inaugural session featured a profound reflection on the convention theme by Rev. Fr Vincent M. Sangma, who called upon the youth to become beacons of hope, integrity, and Christian witness in their villages and communities. The day concluded with the recitation of the Rosary and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, during which prayers were offered for the success of the convention.
The second day focused on leadership formation, youth ministry, and career orientation. Participants engaged in a debriefing and sharing session on the Diocesan Youth Convention held at Purakasia Parish and the Youth Pasch at DBI, enabling them to reflect on broader diocesan youth experiences. A panel discussion on “My Journey Towards the Youth Ministry” and the impact of organizations such as ICYM and TDCYM became one of the highlights of the day. The session was moderated by Shri Jonah A. Sangma, former Parish Youth President, and Miss Kilme R. Marak, former Youth Secretary, who inspired the delegates by connecting past leadership experiences with present aspirations.
In the afternoon, Dr. James T. Sangma, Assistant Professor at CWSSU, conducted a Career Guidance session, equipping the youth with valuable insights into higher education opportunities and emerging career prospects. This was followed by an enriching session by Fr. Krebith T. Sangma, Rector of St. Peter’s Minor Seminary, Tura, on the “Importance of Participation in Sunday Church Liturgy.” He emphasized that professional success and personal growth must always remain rooted in faith and active participation in the sacramental life of the Church.
The final day coincided with the Parish Day celebration, transforming the gathering into a grand community festival. The highlight of the day was the Solemn Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Jogesh B. Sangma, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco Junior College. Seven priests concelebrated the Eucharist, symbolizing the unity and commitment of the clergy toward the spiritual growth of the youth.
A large number of faithful from across the Garobadha region joined the 167 youth delegates in prayer and celebration. Following the Eucharistic celebration, the community gathered for a vibrant cultural programme featuring traditional songs, dances, and performances that showcased the rich cultural heritage and creativity of the youth.
The convention concluded on a joyful and hopeful note, with participants returning to their respective circles renewed in faith, enriched with new knowledge, and strengthened in their commitment to become the “light of the world” in their families, communities, and society.
