Rev Fr Alfred Marzo SDB and other Salesians and the parishioners of Shallang Parish during the Holy Mass celebrating the gift of life to Fr Marzo.
April 9, 2025 was a day of joy, reverence, and a generous dash of laughter as the Sacred Heart Church and Community, Shallang, rolled out the red carpet to celebrate the 90th birthday of the legendary Salesian Rev. Fr. Alfred Marzo, SDB—a man known as much for his holiness as for his large heart!
The celebrations kicked off with a solemn Holy Mass in the morning, offering thanks for nine decades of a life well-lived and generously given in service. The Mass was followed by a vibrant get-together with the students and staff of Joplang Higher Secondary School, Shallang, who turned up in full strength to honour a priest who, at 90, still radiates more energy than the school’s entire morning assembly.
Speaking on the occasion, Rev. Fr. Marcus Lakra, SDB, Rector of the Shallang community, paid glowing tribute to Fr. Marzo’s incredible service to the parish and the people of Shallang. But what really got the crowd chuckling—and jaws dropping—was his proud declaration that Fr. Marzo is the only confrere in the entire Salesian World to own not one, but two JCBs. That’s right, while most priests collect rosaries and religious books, Fr. Marzo collects construction equipment!
The school teachers and students performed a variety of songs and dances to honour the nonagenarian priest.
In his trademark humble style, Fr. Marzo thanked God for 90 years of divine guidance, always guiding him safely, even through the rocky roads of Shallang. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community and the children for organizing such a warm and lively celebration. “I thank the Lord for every year, every person I’ve crossed.” He asked for prayers to enjoy continued good health—not to rest, mind you—but so he can “continue serving the people of God and the Salesian Congregation,” preferably with a hard hat and a backhoe.
As he mingled with fellow Salesians and well-wishers, Fr. Marzo reminded everyone that true joy comes from serving with a smile—and maybe a JCB or two on standby.
Happy 90th, Fr. Marzo! You’re truly God’s gift to Shallang and the Salesian Congregation.
