Dr (Fr) Joy Kachappilly addresses NSS Volunteers at DBIon Gandhi
Guwahati, March 3, 2020: Dr (Fr) Joy Kachappilly of ING Guwahati Province addressed the 500 NSS volunteers gathered at DBI for a 7-day National Camp on ‘Gandhi and Youth’. Fr Kachappilly introduced his topic in the context of the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi. Gandhi seems to be a controversial personality in India but people outside India seem to appreciate him more than people within India. Dr Kachappilly said that the types of leadership Gandhi offered to India is unparalleled and should become a for model for everyone.
Dr Kachappilly said that Gandhi was like anyone of us: fearful, shy, introvert with poor handwriting. He was also poor in games and afraid of interacting with others and was even rejected by his own people when he sailed to England. But Gandhi loved certain principles right from his childhood. He learned to be truthful, honest and non-violent. He learnt from his own mistakes and made used of opportunities that came his way.
Gandhi wants young people to become good examples for others. They should stand up for what they believe in through peaceful means. They must have a definite of purpose and must undertake activities related to people’s welfare. Youth, according to Gandhi must learn to transcend adversaries and become reliable and accountable.
Mahatma Gandhi, says Dr Kachappilly, is the father of our nation and we need to respect him and be proud of him. In the words of Albert Einstein, “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.” Dr Kachappilly exhorted the youth to learn about him, speak about him and follow his footsteps and ensure that the ideals of Gandhi are remembered by future generations. The session ended with a short video presentation on Gandhi and his leadership style.
