The decree was authorised on 24 October 2026 during an audience with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. The recognition marks a significant step forward in the cause for his beatification and eventual canonisation.

The announcement brings joy and gratitude to the Salesian Province of Mary Help of Christians, Guwahati, and to the dioceses and communities across the region that continue to cherish the memory of this pioneering missionary bishop. His life was marked by deep faith, humility, tireless pastoral dedication and an unwavering commitment to proclaiming the Gospel among the people of Northeast India.

A Missionary Who Made Northeast India His Home

Born on 29 August 1906 in Diano d’Alba, in the province of Cuneo, Italy, Oreste Marengo grew up in a Christian family and developed an early attraction to the Salesian vocation. Inspired by the missionary spirit of the Congregation founded by St John Bosco, he came to India in 1923 as a young Salesian missionary.

After years of formation and pastoral preparation, he was ordained a priest on 2 April 1932 in Shillong. He devoted himself to visiting villages, proclaiming the Gospel, preparing catechumens and accompanying Christian communities scattered across the region. His ability to learn local languages, his warmth and simplicity, and his readiness to travel long distances to meet people helped him establish close bonds with the communities he served.

A Pioneering Bishop in Northeast India

Bishop Marengo played a foundational role in the growth of the Catholic Church across the region. In 1951, he was appointed the first Bishop of Dibrugarh. In 1964, he was transferred to Tezpur, where he continued to consolidate Christian communities and strengthen the Church’s pastoral mission.

His missionary service later brought him to the Garo Hills. Following the establishment of the Diocese of Tura on 7 April 1973, he served as its Apostolic Administrator, guiding the young diocese during a formative period in its history. At the time, the diocese comprised six parishes, with communities spread across the Garo Hills and adjoining areas of Assam.

Under his pastoral leadership, new mission centres and parishes emerged, creating a stronger foundation for the Church’s growth. His work contributed to the development of ecclesiastical structures and the encouragement of local vocations, helping prepare the way for the continued growth of the Church in the region.

A Shepherd Close to the People

Bishop Marengo’s missionary approach was characterised by personal presence, simplicity and perseverance. He travelled extensively, often on foot, to reach remote villages and families. His ministry went beyond preaching and sacramental service; he sought to accompany people in their daily lives and strengthen their faith through personal contact and pastoral care.

Even after stepping aside from active leadership, he continued to serve the Church and the people of the Garo Hills. Tura remained his home until his death on 30 July 1998. His decision to spend his final years among the people he had served reflected the depth of his missionary commitment and his enduring affection for Northeast India.

A New Step on the Path to Sainthood

The title Venerable is conferred by the Catholic Church after the Pope authorises the promulgation of a decree recognising a candidate’s heroic virtues. It signifies the Church’s recognition that the person lived the Christian virtues in an exemplary manner.

Bishop Marengo’s recognition advances his cause towards beatification. The next stage ordinarily requires the recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession, subject to the Church’s established procedures. Beatification and canonisation involve further discernment and formal declarations by the Church.

For the Salesian Province of Mary Help of Christians, Guwahati, this recognition is a moment of profound thanksgiving. Bishop Marengo’s life remains a powerful testimony to the Salesian spirit of seeking the salvation of souls, serving young people and accompanying communities with faith and compassion.

His journey from Italy to the villages of Northeast India stands as a reminder that missionary greatness is measured not by position or recognition, but by a life freely given in service. As the Church takes this new step in his cause for sainthood, the faithful are invited to remember his example, seek his intercession and continue the mission to which he dedicated his life.

News Courtesy: HUB News

In a historic moment for the Salesian Congregation, the Province of Guwahati and the Catholic Church in Northeast India, Pope Leo XIV has recognised the heroic virtues of Bishop Orestes Marengo, SDB, officially declaring him Venerable.
