Preached by Mr. Subash Sangma and his team from Tura, the retreat commenced on October 18 with a brief yet meaningful inaugural ceremony featuring the veneration of the Word of God, the lighting of candles, and the welcome and felicitation of the animators. With an estimated participation of 1,800 faithful each day, the retreat witnessed an encouraging response from parishioners and became an important occasion for spiritual renewal and healing. Inspired by Luke 5:20–25, the retreat centred on the theme “Worship, Forgiveness and Healing.”

Through a combination of worship, preaching, prayer and guided reflection, the participants were invited to deepen their relationship with God and renew their commitment to Christian living. The first day focused on surrendering oneself to the Lord and accepting His will. One of the preachers reminded the faithful that an annual retreat is a significant opportunity to reaffirm their identity as God’s people and renew their commitment to Him.

The second day was dedicated to repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation. The morning sessions highlighted God’s mercy, the importance of forgiveness, and the need for sincere change of heart. In the afternoon, the faithful were given the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, with six priests available to hear confessions. The final day focused on thanksgiving and spiritual healing, inviting the participants to recognise God’s blessings and carry the fruits of the retreat into their daily lives.

The Eucharistic celebrations on the three days further enriched the spiritual experience. On the opening day, Fr. Lucas Marak, Assistant Parish Priest of Mendal, presided over the Eucharist and emphasised the importance of setting aside time to reconnect with the Creator and strengthen one’s relationship with God. On the second day, Fr. Denu Sangma, a native of Satgaon serving in the Diocese of Bongaigaon, celebrated the Eucharist. Addressing the retreatants, he aptly described a retreat as “a reverse to go forward,” underscoring the importance of pausing for spiritual renewal in order to move ahead with greater commitment.

The concluding solemn Eucharist was celebrated by Fr. Albert Thyrniang, Parish Priest of Satgaon. In his homily, reflecting on the biblical readings, he urged the faithful to renounce forms of idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, envy, heresies, drunkenness and other vices warned against by St. Paul in Galatians 5:19–21. He encouraged them instead to cultivate the fruits of the Holy Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control—as lasting fruits of the retreat (Galatians 5:22–23). At the conclusion of the celebration, Fr. Albert expressed his sincere gratitude to Mr. Subash Sangma and his team, the priests who celebrated the Eucharist and administered the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the members of the retreat committee, and the various parish leaders whose dedication and cooperation contributed to the success of the retreat. He also acknowledged the generous support of parish families, who contributed financially and in kind towards meeting the expenses for meals and other arrangements.

News Courtesy: Fr Albert Thyrniang SDB

The three-day Annual Retreat of Mary Help of Christians Church, Satgaon Parish, concluded on Tuesday, October 20, with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, bringing to a close three days of prayer, reflection, repentance and spiritual renewal.
