History
The Salesian Training Centre (STC) was formed as a community in August 1983, when the 47 aspirants for Salesian Brotherhood were shifted from Don Bosco Tech. community to the old St. Anthony’s college building with Fr. Joseph Puthenpurackal as their rector. The official inauguration and blessing of the house took place on 30th October 1983 by Rev. Fr. Mathai Kochuparambil, Provincial. STC also was given the responsibility of the St. Anthony’s Junior school, earlier under the Don Bosco Tech. community.
The STC aspirantate was closed down in 1992 when the candidates were shifted to Savio Juniorate and Bosco Mount. In 1992, STC accommodated the SAI students, a practice which was discontinued soon after. The STC community then housed the student Brothers pursuing various college and university studies. The entire St. Anthony’s school with Plus Two Science stream was shifted to its present site in February 1997, and the St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School (SAHSS) became part of STC. Archbishop T. Resto Phanrang and Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil (both former headmasters) blessed the new building on 17th March 1997. Shri.M.M.Jacob, governor of Meghalaya, inaugurated the new school building on 20th March 1997. On 1st March 2000, the Junior School (Nursery to Class III) was once again shifted back to the Don Bosco Tech. community with Fr. Marius Thongnibah as its principal.
The history of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School begins in 1901, when the Salvatorian Fathers opened the St. Anthony’s School and Orphanage. The Salesians inherited it on their arrival in Shillong. Bro. Leo Brisson CSC, who had looked after the school after the departure of the Salvatorians, handed over the school to its first Salesian headmaster, Fr. Bonardi, in the year 1922.
In 1922, Fr. Bacchiarello, the new Headmaster, in accordance with the decision taken by the provincial council, separated the school from St. Anthony’s Orphanage and Don Bosco Industrial school. The school was placed under the parish priest, Fr. Vendrame. The school received its permanent recognition from the government on 19th August 1932. With the opening of St. Anthony’s College, the St. Anthony’s HS functioned in the premises of Don Bosco Tech. In 1997, the school was shifted to a new building in the premises of STC, and now forms part of that community.
