History
Sacred Heart Theological College, originally known as Our Lady’s House, was opened at Laitumkhrah, Shillong, in 1928 for the formation of the Salesian Clerics. After the devastating fire of 1936, it was shifted to its present site at Mawlai in 1938. Till 1967, it was the sole theological college for the Salesians in India. It was then temporarily closed down and Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore, was opened. SHTC was reopened in 1976.
Ever since its reopening, the college has been striving to promote missiological studies. In 1981, the college was affiliated to the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome, and in 1989, it was aggregated to the same university, enabling its students to obtain a Master’s Degree in Theology with specialization in Missiology.
The college chapel is a shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built by Fr. Constantine Vendrame in 1934. At its reopening in 1976 additional buildings were put up like the student’s block, the auditorium etc. In 1981, a new library block was constructed which now houses about 80,000 volumes and a documentation centre. In 1994, work started on the construction of the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures which also houses a museum on the tribes of North East India.
The confreres who worked in the parish of Mawlai and in Sacred Heart Boys’ School formed part of the community till 1992 when the parish was established as a separate religious community, with the school confreres also under it. The college has a small hostel which houses ITLR students and college going youngsters. In 1993, a one-year diploma course in theology for religious and laity was started. In 2001, it began a two year theological formation course for the Salesian Brothers.
