History
Situated at Mawlai township, Mathias Institute was opened in 1990. It is named after Msgr. Louis Mathias sdb, the zealous leader of the pioneering group of Salesian missionaries who came to Northeast India in 1922. It is a study house for the post-graduate students of theology as also other theology students who are enrolled in the Sacred Heart Theological College, just a stone’s throw away from it.
When the M.Th course was started at SHTC, the first few batches of students resided at SHC together with the B.Th students. It was soon found to be insufficient and a proposal was made to construct a new house. Since August 1993, the Salesian Brothers and the lay men attending the one year Integrated Training for Laity and Religious (ITLR) conducted at SHTC were also residing in the community. From 18th June 1996, the lay men have been accommodated elsewhere. In 2001 August, the SHTC began a two year course of theological formation for the Salesian Brothers. The Salesian Brothers too form part of the community. The quiet and serene atmosphere is conducive to study and research; the great requirement of pastoral ministry in the city and around helps the students combine theological and intellectual pursuit with practical missionary experience and challenges.
Scope
- Providing an ambience of silence, reflection and study conducive to a proper theological reflection and research leading to the appropriate degrees of Diploma in theology, B.Th and M.Th
