History

The parish of Khliehriat is in the district of Jaintia Hills, and is about 100 kms. away from Shillong, falling under the jurisdiction of Shillong Archdiocese. The parish has a Catholic population of 13,000 spread over 55 villages. The parish is permanently entrusted to the Salesian congregation as per the agreement signed between the then Archbishop, Most. Rev. Hubert D’Rosario and the Salesian Provincial, Fr. Mathew Pulingathil on 13-07-1976.

The Holy Family Church of Khliehriat was carved out of the Jowai parish in 1975 to comprise half of the Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya. Fr. Joseph Fantin was appointed as its first parish priest, and his brother, and Fr. Henry Fantin as the Headmaster of the Khliehriat High School. Fr. John Khonglah was the first Assistant Parish priest. Later on, a few diocesan priests were also appointed as Assistant Parish Priests.

As of now the parish has 1 Higher Secondary School, 2 High Schools, 4 M.E. Schools and 48 Lower Primary Schools. The MSMHC Sisters working in the parish assist in the school and in the apostolate. They also look after the boarding for girls.
