History

Don Bosco Institute (DBI), centre for human development, leadership and research, is the permanent campus and central office of the Don Bosco Youth Mission and Educational Services (DBYES), the nodal youth pastoral department of the province of Guwahati.
1991 saw the founding of the Don Bosco Youth Mission in Shillong as the central youth pastoral department of the province. In 1993, it took on a wider perspective and was renamed as DBYES, and its offices shifted to the Provincial House, Guwahati. As the name itself suggests, the objective was to cater to the youth (urban and rural), to their requirements and aspirations, and to form them as honest, good and God-fearing citizens.

The year 2000 saw the laying of the foundation stone of the DBI. Programmes began to be conducted in the half-completed premises from 2003, and the founder cum executive director, Fr. VM Thomas, took up residence at DBI in January 2004. Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the centre for professional studies on 22nd November 2004. The building was blessed and dedicated to the youth of Northeast India by Rev. Fr. Pascual V. Chavez, the Rector Major, on 28th Feb. 2005.

Various vocational courses, personality development programmes, in-service renewal and updating programmes for teachers, educationalists and others, youth camps, etc., form the central activity of the DBI, which also conducts social awareness and outreach programmes. It reaches out to the young and those engaged in the education and formation of the young with the message of building dreams and shaping lives.
