History

Situated in the Nowgong district of Assam, Amsoi also shares the border of the Karbi Anglong district. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Guwahati and is 86 Kms. away from the city of Guwahati. There are more than 40 villages and 3000 families in and around Amsoi within a ten kilometer radius. There are 11 Catholic families and the total catholic population at present is around 80.

In May 1993, Fr. Joseph Pazhekadavan was assigned by the Provincial to the new parish centre to be founded and established at Amsoi. Following the directives of Bishop Thomas Menamparampil, a site suitable for the evangelization of the whole area was founded at Doinipukri between Amsoi new market and the Bura Roja village. It was a seven-acre plot with six-year-old rubber trees. On 24 February 1994, the land was taken possession of after the owner executed an irrevocable Power of Attorney in the Church’s favour as well as an “Agreement for sale.” On 26 March, 1994, a part of the house of a Hindu gentleman at Amsoi was offered to the priest and he along with a teacher and two helpers began to reside in that temporary shelter.

On 18th April 1994, a primary school was started with 35 students in the space offered by the same Hindu gentleman, Mr. Sagunlal Agarwal. Later, the school was shifted to the incomplete temporary school building cum residence in the acquired property. There was initial opposition from certain quarters to a Christian presence in the village but now they have given a signed document addressed to the DC of Nowgong, ending all opposition and requesting our presence.
