History

One of the oldest parishes of Diphu Diocese, Sojong is about 170 kms away from Guwahati and has a catholic population of about 8,700 in 1,400 families spread over 48 villages.

Sojong parish is the mother of all the Salesian institutions in the Karbi Anglong district.  The parish was founded in January 1967 and it is known as the Church of Christ the King. The first parish priest was Fr. John Maria, who stayed for about four years. After Fr. John Maria’s tenure, for a short period, the parish was looked after by Fr. Joseph MCBS and then it was handed over to the Salesians in 1972.

Fr. Joseph Pazhekadavan and Fr. O.V. Abraham worked hard to build up the Catholic Community of Sojong. The present presbytery, the convent, the boys’ hostel, the school, etc., were completed during their time. Fr. Albano D’Mello, the next parish priest, completed the parish church and the hall. The Apostolic Carmel Sisters help out in the school, the girls’ boarding and in the pastoral care of the communities.
