History
Located in the Ulukuchi block of the Karbi-Anglong district of Assam, Amkachi is about 117 Kms away from Guwahati and 60 Kms from the nearest town of Jagi Road. The Catholic population in the centre is about 3,700, belonging to the Karbi, Tiwa, Khasi and Nepali tribal groups. The parish runs a number of primary schools and primary health centres, besides the boarding at the centre.
Amkachi was officially inaugurated by Bishop Mathai sdb on 17-05-1989 with Fr. Mathew Kadavunkal sdb as the priest in-charge. It was erected as a parish on 17-04-1999 with Fr. Quirinus Syiemlieh sdb as parish priest by Bishop John Thomas DD. Born of Umswai parish, its jurisdiction extends over 22 villages. Its history goes back to the 1940’s when it formed part of the parish of Raliang, and then of Laitumkhrah, Mawlai, Nongpoh and Mawbri respectively (all historically and currently belonging to the Shillong Archdiocese), and then under Umswai parish of Diphu.
