History

Located in the Barpeta District of Assam, Doomni is about 120 kms. away from the city of Guwahati and falls within the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Guwahati. The parish numbers about 6,500 Catholics in 1300 families, spread over 21 Catholic villages.

Doomni was part of the parish of Barpeta Road. Fr. Morra built the present residence of the Fathers in 1971. The parish of Doomni was formed in 1972.

The origin of the Christian community in the area dates back to 1926 when the Brook Bond Company established a Tea Estate and labourers were brought from Chotanagpur in Bihar and from Orissa. Other village Christian communities arose when ex-tea garden workers cleared the forestlands and occupied them. The Adivasis form the majority of the Catholics. The parish church was built and blessed on February 23, 1978. A school was started in 1973 to look after the educational needs of the Catholics and others of the area.  The school is an Assamese medium M.E. school and is coeducational. The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians help in the running of the school. A boarding was also constructed in 1986 with a capacity for 70 inmates.
