History
Located in the district of Kokrajhar, Bengtol is the heartland of the Bodos. The mission is about 205 kms. away from Guwahati. The parish of Bengtol is now in the newly created diocese of Bongaigaon. The Catholics number around 7,000 in 69 villages.
Bengol was carved out of the parish of Barpeta and made into a new parish on 24th June 1966 with Fr. J. Zubizaretta sdb as the first parish priest. A hostel for the boys was built in 1968 and in the same year an Assamese medium school was started. The Bishop of Tezpur, Rt. Rev. Robert Kerketta, handed over the parish to the Salesians on 1st January 1978. The parish church was built and blessed in January 1984. The parish has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years. Further division of the parish has taken place.
The main institution is the parish and emphasis is laid on spreading and fostering the faith of the flock. There is a full-fledged English Medium High School and hostels for the boys and girls. The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians have been in the parish since 1979. They run the boarding for girls, helping in the school and in the pastoral work. They also run a dispensary to take care of the sick.
