History
Don Bosco College is situated at Tura, the District Headquarters of W. Garo Hills District of Meghalaya at a distance of about 225 kms away from Guwahati. It is the Salesian response to a long-standing request from the Fathers, Catholics and the public of Garo Hills, to have a catholic college in Garo Hills. Two plots of land were acquired for the purpose by Fr. Antony Buccieri sdb. The task of starting the preparatory work towards the establishment of the college was undertaken by Fr. Karippaparambil George sdb when he came to join the Don Bosco School community in 1986. He obtained the necessary permission from the North Eastern Hill University on 05-11-1986.
The Governing body of the college was constituted by Fr. Kalapura John sdb, the then provincial on 03-01-1987, and Fr. Vettickathadam Cyriac sdb was appointed the first Principal of the college. The classes began on 21-04-1987. The official inauguration of the college was on 22-05-1987 by Shri P.A.Sangma, Union Minister of Labour, and the college was blessed by Rt. Rev. George Mamalassery, Bishop of Tura.
Initially, the college offered Pre-University Arts and BA courses. The classes were held in the Boys’ Hostel building of the Sacred Heart Parish, Tura. A few boys were also taken into the hostel in 1987. In the following year, after prolonged discussions and discernment, the college began to admit girls too. The Salesian Sisters were entrusted with the hostel for girls.
In 1993, the college was shifted to the buildings built for the hostel at Sampalgiri. Over the years, the college was affiliated for the Pre–University Science Course, B.Sc, B.A. Honours and BSc honours courses. The college today has a total strength of 850 students, the majority of whom are Catholics. There are about 30 lecturers and 12 non-teaching staff.
